Frequently Asked Questions About Provider Identifiers

Q. Is there a way to verify Employer Identification Numbers (EIN)?
A. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the IRS is not allowed to discuss or give out any information about EINs to anyone but the recipient of the number unless someone has power of attorney for the EIN recipient.

If you are in doubt about a provider's EIN number, you may ask for a copy of the IRS letter the provider received when the EIN number was issued. If the provider is not willing to provide this information, the issue is then between the provider, billing agent, or payer. Suspect of fraud should be reported to the IRS.
